Every month, Orlando Eats highlights a sampling of top tastes in Central Florida; three random nibbles that delighted, surprised, or befuddled with their brilliance. In August, we spent an inordinate amount of time indulging at Audubon Park’s Bem Bom, which has recently been turning out an amazing array of authentic Portuguese specials (two of which made this list). We also enjoyed a fantastic white pie at Pizza Bruno in the Hourglass District. Without further delay, our Best Bites at Orlando restaurants in August 2019.
Alheira @ Bem Bom
Alheira is a Portuguese sausage often made with poultry and/or bread – served at Bem Bom with garlic, tangerine and what we think are pimenta biquinho peppers. A fantastically well-balanced bite. Although a staple these days, alheira is an invention of Portuguese Jews in the late middle ages seeking to outfox those pesky Inquisitors.
Octopus @ Bem Bom
One of the better octopus dishes we’ve had in town of late featuring a lovely char and fork-tender meat atop olive oil and smothered in peppers, onions, garlic. Pairs well with Bem Bom’s papa secos (Portuguese rolls) and a cold bottle of vinho verde.

New Haven Clam Pie @ Pizza Bruno
We’re always hesitant when ordering white pies despite the fact that we always enjoy them. The Clam Pie at Pizza Bruno is fantastic – perhaps the best white pie we’ve had in town, featuring clams, parmesan, mozzarella and caciocavallo, oregano and thyme, heavy cream, Neuske’s bacon, lemon and parsley. We find that clams don’t always play well with mozzarella, but in combo with the other ingredients this works wonderfully. A single bite had drunken Yalies dancing in our heads. New Haven represent!
