Lake Nona is more than “Medical City.” More than a bland and planned suburban wonderland. It’s also home to some sort of tortilla-wrapped golf orgy. Taco Festival Orlando is coming to Lake Nona in February and will be held in driving range-cum-entertainment complex, Drive Shack Orlando.
Our initial gut is not good on this one. Among the details published online is a vendor list which includes none of O-town’s hipster heavy hitters like Hunger Street or Black Rooster, and none of our authentic mom and pop’s like La Hacienda or Tortas El Rey. What does appear are a number of suspect out-of-town taco trucks, a Jamaican eatery, a seafood restaurant, some shaved ice and a handful of big corporate Sponsors. Even up-and-down Pig Floyd’s with an outpost in Lake Nona doesn’t make an appearance. The saving grace? Tijuana Flats will be there, so…kidding, kidding. No one wants to eat at Tijuana Flats.
So, yeah. It’s going to happen. There are likely far worse ways to spend an afternoon – nothing wrong with a day of GIANT NACHO BARS, bounce houses and margaritas. Wait. We could see how that could go wrong. Regardless, if you’re going, it appears you should go with low expectations and a bag of clubs: There’s several special event packages that orbit around golf and exclusive lounge access. Nothing says authentic Mexican street food like VIP areas and 9-irons.
Taco Festival Orlando will be held on February 9 & 10, 2019 between 1pm-6pm (or 12pm for true taco VIPs!) at Drive Shack Orlando. DSO, as I like to call it, is located at 7285 Corner Drive just off Lake Nona Blvd. If anyone at TFO, as no one likes to call it, wants to reach out and update Orlando Eats on the vendors, please do. We’ll be happy to post updates here. Prove us wrong, fellers. We need more food events like this, just not more food events like this.
